Luke shares his experiences from real clients. Making sure you understand how it works is important, you don’t want to be caught by surprises when something happens to a loved one.

Thank you for joining us live on 2CC, YouTube, Spotify or your favourite podcast streaming service for ‘The Strategy Stacker – Luke Talks Money’.

Key topics covered include:
  • Have you thought about or had a discussion about what happens to your super when you pass?
  • Generally, there are two ways that your super can get transferred to a nominated beneficiary – (1) Taken as a lump sum or (2) take it as pension called as a death benefit pension.
  • Taxation may apply depending on your age.
  • What about your pension if you’re retired? Is it reversionary or non-reversionary to your partner or spouse if you have one?
  • Remember a pension can’t be paid to a non-dependant, for example an adult child.
  • It’s a decision tree approach to help you achieve what you’re looking to achieve – seek advice if you need help.
  • Understand what your fund does in the event of your death. Not all funds are the same. Some funds are better than others, and some funds are horrible.
  • Some funds for example don’t offer a pension option, which limits your options.
  • Remember superannuation is not controlled by your will.
  • Remember binding nominations can lapse.
  • How can money come out to adult kids (a non-dependent child) – can you use a recontribution strategy to reduce tax or transfer money to your Estate to control the distribution?
  • There might be also reasons why you don’t direct it to your estate, eg if you have a blended family.
  • Luke shares his top tips thinking about super death benefit pensions.
  • Remember to seek advice if you need help. Good estate planning advice is worth it for peace of mind.
