Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra 1206AM in Money Matters, which aired live on Friday 1 November 2024. Luke joins Leon Delaney in the studio with Luke to talk about how to work effectively with a financial planner. Advising clients is an important role, and to get the most out the relationship you have with a financial planner, there’s things you can do to make your life easier and the life of your planner too.
It’s important to remember that all financial planners have to follow certain rules when providing and implementing financial advice. This includes writing a statement of advice and following processes set by the providers when it comes to buying and selling your investments. Thank you for joining us live on 2CC, YouTube or your favourite podcast streaming service with ‘The Strategy Stacker – Luke Talks Money’.
Key topics covered include:
- Ensure that you sign the paperwork correctly. A good financial planner will highlight where you need to sign the paperwork to make it easy for you.
- If a form requires a ‘Wet Signature’, this means you need to sign the form with a pen. Some investments and insurance companies require pen signatures, not electronic signatures. We agree this is old fashioned, but that’s how some institutions still work.
- Don’t leave things to the last minute like selling investments if you need cash for a purchase like a car or caravan. It takes time to sell down investments or access money from super or a retirement pension. If in doubt about a timeline simply ask. A good financial planner will be happy to help you.
- Don’t forget to date the important documents you sign.
- If you’re meeting with your financial planner online, make sure your software is up-to-date and working correctly before the meeting starts. Financial planners are good with numbers, but not so great with helping you fix your IT issues.
- Super funds and investment managers and banks are becoming very stringent with online access. Make sure you follow their instructions. My Gov and My Gov ID can be challenging too. Most offer help lines if you need technology assistance.
- Return all the paperwork you need to action, missing pages means a financial planner can’t action your requests and your advice implementation gets delayed.
- Luke shares his top 3 tips for working effectively with a financial planner.
