Luke on 2CC – Should I go back to work after I retire? What are my options?

Financial Planner Luke Smith joined 2CC Talking Canberra in Money Matters, that aired live on Friday 8 May 2026. The topic is: Should I go back to work after I retire? What are my options?

It’s not uncommon for many early-stage retirees to rattle around the house and decide they’d like to go back to work – just a couple or a few days per week. It’s a conversation that Luke has with many of his clients after they’ve willingly given up full-time work. They are often bored, missing social interaction, want to stay mentally sharp and want to fund a few extra activities while they still have a capacity to earn.

Thank you for joining us live on 2CC, YouTube, Spotify or your favourite podcast streaming service for ‘The Strategy Stacker – Luke Talks Money’.

Key topics covered include:
  • What is a plan really?
  • Rattling around after retirement – Can you go back to work?
  • What are your retirement goals? Even golf may get to be hard work if you were doing it 5 days a week.
  • Want more money in your retirement? Is working 2 days a week (25k a year) easier than saving 500k?
  • There’s a misconception that you’ll pay too much tax if you go back to work after retirement – Luke gives an example.
  • Going back to work offers several benefits beyond income as well. Don’t dismiss the opportunity without exploring it.
  • Understanding what age 65 actually means in terms of super.
  • What is a recontribution strategy? Can I add money to super after I retire?
  • Live listener question: If you are on the Centrelink aged pension, can you go back to work?
  • Luke shares the key things to think about when asking should I go back to work after I retire?
